Czech Republic and Slovakia Publishing Market Profile 2008
The Publishers Association Ltd, Oct 2008, Pages: 96
The two small markets of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with a joint population of 15.6m, are treated together in the GPI series because, although they are separate and distinctive in a number of important ways, they are closely linked by geography, history and mutually comprehensible languages. Therefore, they are normally addressed through a common strategy by British publishers.
The Czech Republic and Slovakia have very well educated and literate populations with long traditions of book-reading and book-buying and today English is the foreign language of choice for most people. Taken together they imported nearly £13 m of books from the UK in 2007, putting them ahead of China, Russia and New Zealand – markets to which British publishers tend to devote much more attention. Imports are strongest in mass-market fiction; travel and illustrated books; some children’s books; academic and professional books, particularly in medicine and business and, especially, ELT.
Both markets also have potential for rights sales, though the Czech Republic is significantly stronger in this respect than Slovakia. Fiction, certain general and illustrated non-fiction titles, children’s books and some academic books are genres with particular potential.
This market profile surveys the publishing context and the opportunities for UK publishers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The two markets are considered together not only because of their very strong ethnic, linguistic and cultural links and the fact that for most of the twentieth century they were a single country of two nations, Czechs and Slovaks, – Czechoslovakia – but also because, even after the Velvet Divorce, the two markets remain closely related and will normally be approached by UK publishers through an integrated strategy. However, the markets also have their own identities and significant differences, which are explored in this report.
