Poland Seeks Nuclear Power for Energy Security and Increase its Electricity Exports

Summary

The development of a nuclear power program in Poland will help the country to meet the growing targets of growing electricity demand and achieve the European Union’s climate protection requirements. PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna S.A. (PGE), a state owned enterprise, will invest in constructing two nuclear power plants, each with an installed capacity of about 3,000 MW. Nuclear power does not emit any carbon-dioxide, dust and sulfur-dioxide. The Polish energy policy includes plans to develop nuclear power until 2030 in order to secure the country’s long-term energy supply and enable it to remain a net exported of electricity. In the early 1990s the Ministry of Economy planned to build a nuclear power plant in Zarnowiec, but subsequently cancelled these. It’s Energy Policy for Poland until 2025, released in 2005, identified the need for nuclear energy in Poland. The Polish Energy Policy until 2030, released in 2008, also outlined plans to build two nuclear power plants by the end of 2020. Thermal power sources were the major source for electricity generation in Poland and they contributed about 90% of the country’s total electricity generation in 2009. However, this is expected to decline to 75% in 2020 due to the emergence of renewable energy sources. Electricity generation through nuclear power will enable Poland to diversify its energy sources, which it wants to do in order to meet the requirements set by the Kyoto treaty and also to increase its energy independence. The Polish government aims to generate about 9.3% of the country's electricity from nuclear power generation facilities by 2030, while coal's share should drop to 60%.
