Chinese Industrial Biotechnology Industry: An Analysis

Biotechnology is one of the significant industries in the global sector of science and technology. After showing tremendous results in pharmaceutical industry (red biotech) and agriculture industry (green biotech), biotechnology is now applied in industrial production (white biotech). Industrial biotechnology is the application of biotechnology for the processing and production of chemicals, materials and energy.
In the past few years, the Chinese industry for biotechnology has grown at a rapid pace and holds a significant position in the world market at present. For example, China has become the largest MSG and Vitamin C supplier at present, and the third largest fuel ethanol producer and consumer in the world by the end of 2009. The Chinese government has made major contribution for the promoting of this sector, which, in turn, is boosting the bio-based economic development of the country. Even the 12th five year plan would be focused on promotion of innovation and industrialization of biotechnology industry.

The market analysis of products like lysine, methionine, threonine, tryptophan, citric acid, sorbitol, corn starch, artificial sweeteners etc, shows that China would become the market leader in upcoming years. The trade analysis of such products shows that their imports in past 5 years have declined significantly. However the exports have shown increasing trend.
