Synopsis

The market for converged media and applications in Ireland has been hampered by poor broadband infrastructure. The position has become brighter since 2008 as the main cable operator UPC Ireland has upgraded its network, and as the incumbent eircom has invested in its NGN and expanded its bundled services offers. Nevertheless, convergence in Ireland continues to suffer from limited fibre deployment beyond a few greenfield sites. This report presents an overview of all these platforms and major service providers in 2011. It also notes the status of digital TV via the terrestrial, cable and satellite platforms, as well as interactive TV services.

Key developments:
RTÉ initiates Saorview DTT service; coverage to be supplemented by satellite TV Saorsat; Magnet Networks launches free web TV; government’s NewEra broadband plans to support connectivity; eircom planning IPTV service in mid-2012; regulator and operator data to Q3 2011; market developments to early 2012.

Companies covered in this report include:
UPC Ireland, Smart Telecom, Magnet Networks, eircom, Casey Cablevision.
