Thailand Intelligence Report - Despite 3G Setbacks the Mobile Market Will Drive Future Growth
Pyramid Research, Inc, December 2010
The Thai telecom market generated $7.2bn in service revenue in 2009, and then rebounded after the economic contraction to grow 10.6% to $8.0bn in 2010. The CAGR for the 2011-2015 period will continue at a steady 6.4%. Although overall growth will be behind that of its peers in Asia-Pacific, mobile data and fixed broadband will continue to perform well, growing at a CAGR 23.9% and 19.3%, respectively over the 2010-2015 period.
While the 3G and WiMAX licensing process has become mired in delays, mobile operators have begun trialing 3G services, albeit on a more limited scale. For example, in November CAT Telecom approved plans for Total Access Communication (DTAC) and True Move to launch 3G HSPA services over the 850MHz spectrum. The operators are currently in the testing phase.
