Bolivia: Mobile Operators Hope for a 3G Boost

The market will generate $971m in revenue in 2010 and will continue growing over the forecast period to $1,266m in 2015. This growth will be fueled mainly by mobile voice and data services, which, after growing 31% combined from 2008 to 2009, will continue to grow at a 26.7% CAGR over the rest of the forecast period. Mobile voice will also post growth, at a CAGR of 4.5%. In 2009, mobile revenue was higher than fixed revenue, and we expect the gap to widen over time. Bolivia’s broadband market remains one of the most underdeveloped in Latin America. Broadband penetration in 2009 stood at 1.4%. Broadband revenue will increase at a CAGR of 8.2% over the next few years, from $40m in 2009 to $77m by 2015. Considering the low penetration of the broadband sector, the strength of cable/MMDS networks and Bolivia’s cooperative structure, we do not expect to see IPTV introduced in the country in the next five years.
