Flue Gas Desulphurization : Growing Markets in Wake of Global Emission Standards
Summary
There are many technologies that can be used in industry to reduce the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the atmosphere. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) is effective and is widely applied in coal-fired power plants. There is a wide range of FGD processes now commercially available. Today, over 300 GWe of coal-fired power plants capacity worldwide are equipped with FGD systems. Other plants burn low sulfur coal in order to comply with regulations. Varieties of FGD processes are available; most use an alkali sorbent to recover the acidic sulfur compounds from the flue gas. The most widely used processes are the limestone gypsum process, which produces a saleable gypsum by-product, variants of the limestone process that produce a disposable sludge, and the spray dry process, which produces a mixed solid waste. With all the coal-fired power plants now in existence and the number of new plants in planning stages around the world, the market for FGD systems is growing rapidly. Studies have shown that the power plants will spend $168 billion on FGD systems between 2005 and 2020. Of the 2.2 million MW of coal-fired plants in operation in 2020, two-thirds will be equipped with FGD systems. Also, current research and development (R&D) needs are to further reduce costs, increase desulfurization efficiencies and improve the reliability of plant components.
