Epidemiology: Gastric Cancer
Datamonitor, Dec 2010, Pages: 34
Since the 1950s, the incidence of gastric cancer has been declining in the seven major pharmaceutical markets (US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK). It is estimated that between 2010 and 2020, gastric cancer incidence rates will continue to fall. Age-adjusted incidence rates are expected to fall across the major markets in line with evidence from population-based studies.
Scope of the report:
- Gain insight to market potential, including a robust 10-year epidemiology forecast of gastric cancer incident cases. - Understand the key epidemiologic risk factors associated with gastric cancer.
Highlights:
Across the seven major pharmaceutical markets (US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK), the incidence rates of gastric cancer are highest in Japan, followed by Italy, whereas in the US and other European markets, the incidence rates are moderately low.
In line with falling incidence rates, mortality from gastric cancer has declined among both men and women in all seven major pharmaceutical markets. However, by the end of 2008, gastric cancer mortality remained substantially higher in Japan.
The predominant risk factors for gastric cancer are nutrition and exposure to Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection.
Key questions answered:
- What are the most robust sources for gastric cancer incidence data? - How will the patient population change over the next decade in the US, Japan, and five major EU markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK)? - What are the major risk factors for gastric cancer that drive the trend in incident cases and how are they changing?
