Epidemiology: Breast Cancer
Datamonitor, Dec 2010, Pages: 34
Breast cancer will continue to be a major cancer among women in the seven major healthcare markets during the forecast period. The number of incident breast cancer cases will increase substantially between 2010 and 2019 in the majority of markets except for the US where marginal increases are estimated. Reasons for this increase include an aging population and increased risk factor prevalence.
Scope of the report:
- Gain insight to market potential, including a robust 10-year epidemiology forecast of breast cancer incident cases. - Understand the key epidemiologic risk factors associated with breast cancer. - Segmented 2010 breast cancer incident cases by age, menopausal status and stage at diagnosis.
Highlights:
Globally, more than 1 million new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year – breast cancer is the most common cancer among women.
The major risk factors for breast cancer are environmental, hormone-related, and dietary factors. Inter-country differences in the prevalence of these risk factors account for most of the variation in incidence.
Across the seven major pharmaceutical markets, the incidence rates of breast cancer are highest in Japan, followed by Italy, whereas in the US and other EU markets, the incidence rates are moderately low.
Key questions answered:
- What are the most robust sources for breast cancer incidence data? - How will the patient population change over the next decade in the US, Japan, and five major EU markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK)? - How do changes in population structure and risk factors affect the trend in incident breast cancer cases? - What are the number of 2010 incident cases of breast cancer by stage and menopausal status? - What are the number of 2010 incident cases of breast cancer by hormonal receptor (estrogen-ER, and progesterone-PR) and HER2 status?
