Based on proprietary market data and insight into the leading fuel retailers, this brief provides you with an up-to-date picture of the service station retailing market in the Netherlands. In addition to outlining service station numbers, fuel sales, competitor shares, c-store, car wash and automatic network data, it also details retailers' product offerings and future directions.

Scope of the report:

- Benchmark your service station retail offer against the major national players in the sector by examining their number of sites, shops and car washes.
- Develop new marketing ideas for your service station shop, car wash and card propositions by examining the activities of other players.
- Make informed pitches to potential partners by gaining insights into the major retailers’ networks, market shares, fuel throughputs and future plans.
- Assess overall market entry potential by accessing key market indicators including registered cars, national fuel volumes and average prices.

Highlights:

In 2009 total fuel consumption declined for the first time since 2006. Total fuel volumes sold declined by 2% primarily due to a decrease in the demand for diesel. In 2009, fuel prices declined in line with global oil prices after a spike in 2008. The average gasoline price dropped by 12%, while the average diesel price fell by 22%.

The Dutch service station network contracted by 1.3% in 2009. Shell has the largest network of service stations, capturing 12.7% of the entire Dutch service station network. Shell was also the largest fuel retailer by volume share in 2009, followed by BP and TOTAL. Shell’s market share is almost double that of BP.

Almost 60% of service stations feature shops in the Netherlands. Shell has the largest network of service station shops followed by TOTAL and BP. In July 2010, Shell installed electronic shelf labels in one of its shops to enable dynamic pricing. Over 30% of the service stations in the Netherlands feature car washes.
