Increasing Focus on Renewable Energy Powers the Growth of the Lead-acid Battery Market

With the concept of ‘green energy’ rapidly gaining currency in Europe, the market for lead-acid battery is expected to receive a fillip, at least until other battery chemistries are well established and capable of replacing them in renewable applications. Lead-acid batteries that comply with environmental regulations and can be completely recycled are likely to find more takers, as it reduces their cost of production and makes them affordable. The batteries’ inherent advantage of efficient performance at low costs is expected to encourage their widespread adoption across Europe. “Apart from the demand from renewable energy utilities, improving telecom infrastructure, which requires large-format batteries at high capacity to ensure uninterrupted supply, also raise the demand for lead acid batteries,” says the analyst of this research. “The proliferation of smart phones requires infrastructure to support 4G networks, which indirectly promotes demand for lead acid batteries for telecom stationary applications.”

While there is evidently a huge market for lead-acid battery, participants should be prepared for intense competition and price wars. They could also face a challenge from other recent battery chemistries with superior technology, lighter weight and better performance. In such a scenario, lead-acid battery manufacturers have to promote their products’ reliability and proven chemistry. Despite the low level of technological advancements, their inexpensive, yet efficient, performance holds them in good stead in the key areas of stationary, motive and automotive applications. “Demand for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) lead acid batteries is high among stationary applications, while for automotive applications, the aftermarket demand is high,” notes the analyst. “In the overall market, the demand for lead acid batteries remains steady, despite price fluctuations and volatility of raw material availability.”
