Argentina’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market forcomputing devices, mobile handsets and AV products, is projected at US$4.7bn in 2011. The marketpicked up in 2010 following a sharp deceleration the previous year, and spending is expected to grow at aCAGR of 8.0% to US$6.3bn by 2015, driven by demand for LCD TV sets, notebook computers, digitalcameras and other key products, and also by rising incomes and greater credit availability.The trading environment for vendors and retailers remains mixed however, despite a strong recovery inprivate consumption growth in early 2010. The likely withdrawal of government stimulus measuresfollowing elections in 2011 is likely to lead to reduced consumption levels. Meanwhile the tax on ‘luxurygoods’ such as mobile phones and digital cameras introduced in December 2009 is likely to the boost theshare of local production in Argentine market sales of products ranging from notebooks to LCD TV sets,and will prompt more vendors to considering expanding local production.

Computers
Computer hardware accounted for around48% of Argentine consumer electronicsspending in 2009. BMI forecastsArgentine domestic market PC sales(including notebooks and accessories) ofU$1.9bn in 2011. Computer hardwareCAGR for the 2011-2015 period isforecast at about 10.3%, with PCpenetration currently around 25%. Thegovernment has committed to procure3mn notebooks for high school studentsover the next three years, but half theunits must be manufactured locally.

AV
AV devices accounted for around 40% ofArgentine consumer electronics spendingin 2009. Argentina’s domestic AV devicemarket is projected at US$1.7bn in 2010.Premium TV set sales were robust aheadof the FIFA World Cup in June 2010, andsales of LCD TV sets are projected todrive AV spending growth at a projectedCAGR of 5.3% between 2011 and 2015.A US$2bn government plan for digitalTV in the country will provide a boost tothe market for TV sets and decoders.

Mobile Handsets
Mobile handset sales accounted foraround 10% of Argentine consumerelectronics spending in 2009. Following areversal in 2009, Argentine markethandset sales are expected to grow at aCAGR of 6.3% to US$608mn in 2015, asmobile subscriber penetration passed130% in 2010. Argentina’s 3G marketwill be responsible for much of themobile market’s growth, with subscribersalready responding well to the newservices on offer over 3G networks.Meanwhile smartphones recorded tripledigitgrowth in H110, driven by theconsumer segment.'
