Summary
Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) has re-emerged as an energy technology for coal conversion and utilization given its attractive economics, ability to access inaccessible coal, and versatility of use. The new and already made cost estimates, engineering analysis, and new commercial pilots suggest that UCG can produce syngas for half to one fourth of the cost when compared to surface gasifiers. UCG is currently experiencing resurgence with the development of a handful of initial commercial start ups in the last decade, as well as some successful pilot projects. However, a significant research and development effort is needed to fully commercialize the technology and make it available for wide-scale use.
