The Top 50 Transdermal Drug Delivery Technology Companies Worldwide completely updates and significantly expands, (from 98 to 142 pages), The Top 40 Transdermal Drug Delivery Technology Companies Worldwide, which was published in July, 2009. It takes account of all recent mergers, acquisitions and liquidations, documents e.g. changes to senior management (and their contact details) and describes additional products and new technologies. Most importantly, the report contains ten companies that were not included in the first report e.g. Janisys Limited - spun out from the Galway, Ireland medical device developer, Crospon Ltd., in January 2010, the Company’s drug delivery platform, which leverages ink-jet printing technology licensed from Hewlett-Packard, enables painless, controlled release of one or more drugs in a single patch to the skin.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first transdermal patch products in 1981. These delivery systems provided the controlled systemic absorption of scopolamine for the prevention of motion sickness (Transderm-Scop®) and nitroglycerine for the prevention of angina pectoris associated with coronary artery disease (Transderm-Nitro®). Until the commercial success of these products, it was still perceived too difficult for an active molecule to overcome the barrier properties of human skin and penetrate into the blood system at adequate quantities to elicit a therapeutic effect.

In recent years, the transdermal route of drug delivery has evolved considerably and it now competes with oral treatment. A number of transdermal technologies have been developed which employ active delivery, in which the stratum corneum is breached to enhance the permeability of the skin. These active transdermal technologies include iontophoresis, electroporation, microneedles, abrasion, needleless injection, suction, stretching, ultrasound, magnetophoresis, radio frequency, lasers, photomechanical waves, and temperature manipulation. As a consequence of the development of these technologies many more new products comprised of therapeutic proteins and peptides for transdermal delivery will be seen.

It is estimated that the market value for transdermal delivery increased to $21.5 billion in 2010 and it is expected to increase to $31.5 billion in the year 2015.

There are many drug delivery technology companies worldwide. This report profiles the Top 50 transdermal ones. These are the companies with the most innovative and effective technologies and the largest intellectual property estates.
