Best Practices for Developing Wireless Policy
AOTMP, Dec 2010, Pages: 27
The backbone of an effective wireless mobility management program is corporate policy. Considering the mobile workforce has grown exponentially over the past several years, the mere presence of policy has never been greater. Furthermore, the number of Smart Devices and installed applications has also increased significantly, requiring that enterprises have formal policies in place to help secure their wireless environments. More organizations have a wireless policy in place compared to two years ago (78% in 2010 vs. 66% in 2008). This trend reflects that more enterprises are realizing the importance of policy and how it will help them to manage their wireless environments more efficiently and effectively.
Policy, at its core, consists of two elements. The first element is corporate policy. This outlines the organization’s specific approach and philosophy towards managing the wireless environment. The second element is the user policy. This contains the guidelines set forth by the organization in terms of the acceptable usage of wireless devices. It is important to make this distinction, as an effective policy strategy will consider both elements.
