Wireless Trend Series: Mobility Management within the Enterprise
AOTMP, Jan 2011, Pages: 55
There are many trends shaping the wireless landscape today that are effecting how enterprises manage their mobile environments. AOTMP recently uncovered that organizations are managing more device models, applications and operating systems than ever before. These trends, however, only tell part of the mobility story. This research delves deeper into the wireless practices and preference of enterprises today:
- What are the adoption trends for Android, Apple, Microsoft and RIM? - Which OS versions are most widely supported? - Which vendors are most widely adopted when it comes to device security? - Are tablet devices such as the iPAD® becoming more prevalent within the enterprise?
All of this, and much more, has recently been uncovered within AOTMP’s initial publication of the 2011 Wireless Trend Series.
Executive Summary
In this benchmark study, our analysis shows some very exciting mobile device and smartphone trends within the enterprise market:
- Enterprise Mobile Device (Phone, Data Modem, Wi-FiTM Hotspot & Tablet) Penetration and Spending - Enterprise Mobile Smartphone Preferences - Enterprise Mobile Smartphone Software Application Usage
Our key findings are:
- On average, wireless spend represents 31% of total telecom spend - The average percentage of employees using a mobile device is 27% - 77% of total enterprise mobile devices consist of mobile phones - 89% of enterprises are deploying mobile data modems - 49% of enterprises are deploying mobile Wi-Fi hotspots - 54% of enterprises are deploying Apple iPads® and 58% of these iPads were tied to a 3G mobile broadband data plan - 95% of the Apple iPads using a wireless data plan are on the AT&T Wireless network - 93% of enterprises issue mobile devices for their employees and 54% replace them every 2 years - Only 27% of enterprises are sole sourced with a single mobile operator for wireless services - Only 33% of enterprises support a single smartphone OS platform; the RIM BlackBerry® OS is the largest portion with 86% market share - Only a small portion (<1%) of companies use the Microsoft Windows® OS platform as their sole/primary smartphone platform - 33% of total mobile phones in our analysis are RIM BlackBerry, followed by 13% Apple iPhone® and 4% Google Android™ based phones - 46% of the total phones remain non-smartphone devices in our analysis, with the potential to upgrade to smartphone platforms in the future - For enterprise smartphone email, 54% of companies are using Microsoft Outlook® Exchange Server while another 27% use the BlackBerry Enterprise Server - A surprising 79% of enterprises do not use security protection software on their mobile devices - Another 89% do not use any virus protection software for their mobile devices
Looking forward, we believe that RIM BlackBerry device market share within the enterprise will begin to decline as companies look for viable alternatives to the BES solution in terms of both email and security.
We also believe that the number of tablet devices (Apple iPad, BlackBerry PlayBookTM, Samsung GalaxyTM) will also accelerate, requiring IT departments to begin creating plans on how to manage these devices.
The largest threat to enterprise IT departments for mobile devices remains security and virus protection. While there is currently not a large threat in the market, we believe that it is only a matter of time before security issues hit the market.
