M&A Activity Increased In The Nuclear Energy Market In Q4 2010

M&As and asset transactions, which include changes in the ownership and control of companies or assets (The authors does not consider this value as a new investment in the market), in the nuclear energy industry registered an increase in the number of deals and deal value, reporting 28 deals worth $9 billion in Q4 2010, as compared to 20 deals worth $1.6 billion in Q3 2010. The substantial increase in deal value was primarily due to the landmark deal of Electricite de France’s agreement to sale 45% stake in EnBW Energie Baden-Wurttemberg for $6.3 billion in Q4 2010.

North America dominated the M&A and asset transaction segment in the number of deals with 17 deals in Q4 2010, followed by Asia-Pacific with seven deals in Q4 2010. However, in deal value, the North America region had a minimal contribution with $539 million, as compared to deal value of $7.1 billion from the European region and $1.2 billion from the Asia Pacific region in Q4 2010.

To support the continuing greenhouse gas emissions program, the industry made a concerted effort through the acquisition and development of uranium mining and processing projects to drive the nuclear power energy market. The uranium mining and processing segment led the M&A activity with 22 deals worth $2.5 billion in Q4 2010, as compared to 18 deals worth $1.6 billion in Q3 2010.

According to Sanjana Kadali, Analyst at The authors, “The rising demand for nuclear fuel to cater the nuclear fleet expansions is acting as a catalyst in the growth of nuclear industry. The concern over fuel security to power the operating as well as upcoming plants is the key reason for the significant development in uranium exploration, mining and processing industry.”
