Business Monitor International's Mexico Tourism Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, tourism associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Mexico's tourism industry.

Tourist Arrivals Show Steady Growth Data released by Secretaría de Turismo (the Ministry of Tourism, Sectur) in December 2010 show that tourist arrivals to Mexico totalled 16.8mn in the first nine months of the year, representing growth of 7.0% year-on-year (y-o-y). This was an encouraging uptick in the tempo of visitor arrivals in Mexico, after y-o-y growth totalled only 5.3% in H110. This suggests that the growth trend is now firmly established, following y-o-y decline in 2009.

We expect Mexico’s tourism to maintain growth in 2011, assisted by the move into high season in late November and December. Holiday arrivals over the Christmas season should also help to boost the sector. That said, the slower than expected economic recovery in the US continues to weigh on arrivals potential, with 2011 therefore likely to experience only moderate growth, rather than a return to pre-2007 figures.

The Mexican government and tourism ministry are attempting to promote the sector heavily, which should help to bolster arrivals from other regions.
Focus On Campeche The southern state of Campeche is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination. Close to the much visited states of Quintana Roo and Yucatan, Campeche offers a beach experience on par with those states while also acting as a gateway to the ancient sites and historical cities of the south. Campeche’s potential as an alternative to Quintana Roo or Yucatan has led to increasing development, even during the industry downturn. As a result, the hotel industry is well prepared to meet an expected uptick in demand as the industry returns to growth in 2011.

Mexicana To Take To The Skies Again Mexicana, the country’s biggest airline before its collapse in August 2010, may resume flights in 2011. According to deputy transport secretary Humberto Trevino, the airline will begin commercial operations on January 24 2011 but a date has not been set for restarting flights. The airline filed for bankruptcy following several years of falling passenger traffic and rising debt levels. The airline had approximately US$1bn of debt when it collapsed. Mexicana has been putting together a rescue plan that would allow it to resume flights, albeit on a far smaller scale. This would involve cutting back the fleet to 30 aircraft and losing approximately 75% of the 8,000 employees. Mexicana would run six US routes and five domestic routes.
