Market drivers and restraints along with the industry challenges have been mentioned and their impact on a time scale is discussed. A comprehensive analysis of the competitive structure for the market has also been mentioned. The research also highlights the trend in the LED's market.

This research service titled European OLED’s Market provides an in-depth analysis of technology, competition, pricing and distribution trends for various OLED and LED technologies in the European market. The research also includes a detailed analysis of adoption of these technologies across various verticals such as government, financial and healthcare sectors.

Market Overview

Collaborative Efforts to Push Wider Adoption of OLEDs

Although organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have high initial costs, their ability to offer energy savings offers numerous opportunities for large-scale adoption. In addition, sizeable investments in research and development are being made by the European Union (EU) and local governments to develop a large-scale, geographically extensive OLED lighting industry. “Increased collaboration between industry, universities and regulatory bodies in Europe will boost product development,” notes the analyst of this research. “Several ongoing research projects in the EU are aimed at developing the value chain and accelerating the commercialisation of OLED technology, driving the market.” Considering the high costs involved in developing viable lighting solutions with OLEDs, several companies, universities and regulatory bodies are working together to promote mainstream adoption of this exciting technology in the EU. Such collaborations have led to increased optimism and investments in OLEDs.

“At the same time, EU funding and legislations will encourage the adoption of OLEDS in the long-term,” adds the analyst. “The EUs leading role in the development of the technology is evident from the signficant investments being made in research and development by it and by local goverments to develop a strong, global OLED lighting industry.” Europe accounts for nearly 40 per cent of the world’s lamp market. The demand for energy-efficient lighting solutions will, therefore, boost demand for OLEDs in this region. OLEDs have the advantage of possessing a uniformly diffuse emitting surface while remaining very energy efficient and environmentally safe. Furthermore, OLEDs are form free and could be made on flexible materials, opening up a wide range of new possibilities. This driver is expected to propel the adoption of OLED when they are made available for commercial lighting applications in the next five years.

Competing Technologies Threaten to Stifle Adoption Levels

OLEDs face stiff competition from technologies such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) and liquid crystal displays (LCDs), especially in display and lighting applications. Well-established technologies such as LCD and plasma are challenging the penetration of OLEDs in TV markets. “The impact of LCD and other technologies in the flat panel display sector is increasing,” remarks the analyst. “The evolving OLED market faces stiff competition as the prices of LCD are decreasing even as the presence of cathode ray tube (CRT) display technology hinders the rapid growth of OLEDs.”

As the OLED industry is in its infancy, educating end users on the energy-saving characteristics of these products is crucial for the success of this market. In addition, the penetration of OLEDs will be dependent on the success of new OLED technologies such as active-matrix OLED (AMOLED).
