The UK market for catering equipment was worth around £600m at manufacturers' selling prices (msp) in 2009, a 9% decline on 2008. The fall in the value of the market in 2009 is recession related.

The catering equipment market, as defined in this Market Report, is divided into five main sectors: cooking equipment; food-handling equipment; food-preparation equipment; refrigeration equipment; and other catering equipment. These products are used to store, prepare, cook, display and serve food; and to wash food, utensils and crockery. In 2009, cooking equipment and food-handling equipment were the two largest sectors of the market.

2009 is reported to have been one of the most difficult trading years in many for the catering equipment market. The weakening demand for catering equipment that was experienced by many suppliers in the second half of 2008 continued into 2009, and conditions became exceptionally challenging for many suppliers. A lack of confidence among major buyers affected sales of all types of catering equipment, including items at the higher end of the price range. Downward pressure by buyers on manufacturers' selling prices also intensified and led to further stress on market values.

In these difficult economic times, the buyers of catering equipment are demanding more from their suppliers. They are, for example, becoming more focused on prolonging the life of their equipment, and the running costs, efficiency and true cost of ownership are becoming of increasing importance. Buyers are also considering the after-sales capabilities of an equipment supplier more, as a disruption in service can be costly to a business. More buyers of catering equipment are also seeking to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their corporate social responsibility. As such, green issues are becoming more prominent, with an increased focus on sustainability, recycling, disposal and energy efficiency.

The market for catering equipment is likely to prove difficult again in 2010, with a lack of order visibility persisting for many businesses. Despite this, some small upturn in sales is projected in 2010, followed by a larger increase in 2011 as caterers start to re-equip after the downturn. Thereafter and up to 2014, demand for catering equipment is forecast to rise further, boosted by rising economic growth and economic recovery overall.
