Online Game Market Snapshot
Taiwan’s online game market revenue should reach $XX million USD in 2010, up XX% from 2009. In 2009 the market reached $XX million, up XX% over 2008. Niko estimates that there are XX million Taiwanese gamers in 2010 rising to XX million by 2014, and the biggest growth in gaming usage is in the social networking service (SNS) games such as on Facebook.com. Facebook usage has skyrocketed since Q2 2009 and now has nearly reached saturation in Taiwan. According to Inside Facebook, Taiwanese registered Facebook users rose from XX to XX million in 3 short quarters between Q2 2009 and Q1 2010. Despite slowing growth of online game service revenues, we expect Taiwan’s market to benefit by the sudden surge in popularity of SNS games the way that other global markets, including mainland China, have done.

Free to play (F2P) games and social networking service (SNS) games are rising in popularity worldwide. In Taiwan, where there has been a bleak economy, some news articles suggest that unemployed workers were spending more and more time at home playing free games. This could boost the number of total gamers, and those people will likely remain hooked even after they regain employment. Of all segments of online games, the Taiwanese gamers in Niko’s online survey say that they spend XX% of their time on MMORPGs, XX% on advanced casual, XX% on casual games and XX% on SNS games.

The F2P model works for the Taiwanese culture. Currently, there are a few time-based games such as Lineage, Lineage II, AION, World of Warcraft and Ragnarok Online (also available as F2P on separate servers). But the majority of games are F2P.
