Market Overview

Oral Medications and Injections Trump Other Delivery Types in the U.S. Inflammatory Disease Drug Delivery Market

According to doctors, oral medications and injections are the most frequently prescribed or administered types of drugs for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Doctors were most satisfied with oral medications, followed by injection and intravenous infusion. Almost 15 percent of prescribers are very dissatisfied or dissatisfied with transdermal patchers and topic gels/creams. Patients’ ease of use and convenience are the key reasons for preferring oral drugs to most other forms of delivery, while perceived patient satisfaction is the top reason for preferring injections. “Doctors most commonly prescribe or administer corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, and combination products for psoriasis, while disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are preferred for rheumatoid arthritis,” says the analyst of this research. “For Crohn’s disease, corticosteroids and aminosalicytates are the most prescribed or administered.”

The majority of respondents are willing to prescribe new drug delivery forms. Of these, 46 percent believe that they adopt new drug delivery forms earlier than their peers. In all, 75 percent of patients that use oral drug delivery for their psoriasis treatment are very satisfied/satisfied against only 55 percent of topical gel/cream users being satisfied/very satisfied. “Reasons for satisfaction with the oral drug delivery method are its ease of self administration (60 percent of patients), low cost (20 percent of patients), and convenience (20 percent of patients),” notes the analyst. “Sixty six percent of Crohn’s disease patients and 91 percent of rheumatoid arthritis patients noted they are very satisfied/satisfied with oral delivery use in their treatment.”
