The United Arab Emirates Freight Transport Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, freight transportation associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on United Arab Emirates's freight transportation industry.

The United Arab Emirates' freight sector continues to be dominated by its air and maritime sectors; unsurprisingly perhaps for a country with such unforgiving terrain the road and rail sectors are not so well developed. Nevertheless, the UAE is investing heavily in building up these neglected sectors, with new road projects continuing apace and it was announced in the quarter that the first phase of the UAE railway, a freight line that will connect all seven Emirates to both Saudi Arabia and Oman, will be opened in 2013. The first section of track will run from Habshan to Ruwais, and will be used for the transportation of granulated sulphur.

In the air freight sector, Dubai Airports announced its 11th consecutive month of double-digit growth in cargo volumes in September. In August, 198,543 tonnes of cargo were handled, up 21.5% on the 163,427 tonnes handled during the same month in 2009. Passenger traffic was also up, rising 14.7%. If growth continues at this rate then there will be definite upside risk to BMI's throughput forecasts.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, stated: 'Growth continues from the very strong base that was established last year and is largely the result of the rapid expansion of flydubai, which is now the second largest source of passenger traffic at Dubai International, and the broadening of Emirates' already impressive network with the addition of new destinations in Europe, Africa and Asia.'

In ports developments in the United Arab Emirates, the Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone (KPIZ), currently under construction midway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the UAE, which will be one of the largest in the world once completed, moved on in its construction. The project has been moving forward despite continued uncertainty within the wider UAE construction sector, with contracts awarded in quick succession over recent months. Most recently, on October 4 2010, the Abu Dhabi Ports Company, which has commissioned the project, awarded an AED484.6mn (US$132mn) contract to Consolidated Contracting Engineering & Procurement for construction and commissioning of civil and structural works on the Industrial Zone 'A' area. The contract includes construction of access roads (4.5km and 1.5km dual carriageways); as well as utility works including substations and pumping stations.
BMI is projecting growth in the UAE's air and maritime freight sectors over our forecast period. This is particularly good news for the UAE's ports of Jebel Ali and Rashid, where tonnage throughput at the ports fell by 10% last year, from 143.5mn tonnes in 2008 to 128.8mn tonnes. In 2010, we see real trade in the UAE gaining a relatively moderate 4.9%. Annual growth will remain in the 7-8% range throughout 2011- 2014.
