The report “Milk & Dairy Market, Bulgaria, 2005 – 2020” provides a comprehensive picture of the market situation, influence factors, future prospects, and competitive environment.

Among the problems faced by local industry are the decreasing milk production and collection and low EU standard quality milk. However, lower quantity of processed milk over the last years did not affect significantly production volume of processed dairy products, and supplementary import of raw milk or milk powder has been made.

Over the revised period dairy imports rose from € 26 mln to € 113 mln, an average increase of over 34% / year. Exports grew by only 10% on average.
The domestic milk & dairy consumption grew by 9% on average, from € 255 mln to € 388 mln at ex-factory prices. Cheese & yoghurts are the most consumed in terms of value and volume, respectively, and butter seems to be the fastest-growing product. Except cheese and yoghurt, all other type of processed dairy consumption per capita increased considerably.

The potential to growth comes from big volumes of unprocessed dairy consumption and huge GAP between average consumption in Bulgaria and EU. To reach the EU average in Bulgaria would have to consume by 23-fold more cream, by 10-fold more fresh cheese and butter and by 4-5 fold more drinking milk and processed cheese. For 2020 our baseline forecast scenario shows an average annual growth of 7% to € 740 mln, while the importance of imports will reach 40% comparing to 29% in 2010.

The Bulgarian dairy market is very fragmented, especially when it comes to cheese products. Bulgarian producers account 2.3% and 0.3% of total EU’s number of dairy and cheese producers and of total revenue, respectively

The report has 21 tables, 11 charts and 3 graphs.
