Thought Leader Insight & Analysis Report - Pancreatic Cancer Q3 2010
Medpredict, Sep 2010, Pages: 133
This report summarizes the perspectives of six U.S.-based Thought Leaders who specialize in the area of pancreatic cancer. All were interviewed post-ASCO 2010.
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma has the lowest five-year survivorship of any cancer. In the next three years pancreatic cancer deaths will exceed those due either to prostate or breast cancer. In the U.S. there will be 38,000 - 42,000 deaths per year, and worldwide the annual number of deaths is 125,000. Approved options for treatment are severely limited. This Panel predicts the therapeutics most likely to be added to a gemcitabine backbone over the coming years.
Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), while more indolent, are also extremely difficult to treat. Once these finally metastasize to liver, bone or other sites, patients have very poor prognoses. Standard of care varies widely today. Our Panel discusses new targeted therapies that will dramatically improve both survival and symptomatic outcomes in these patients.
Mechanisms of action discussed in this report include: - Anabolics - Apoptotics (DR5, WEE1) - Chemotherapy - EGFR - Hedgehog - Hyaluronidase - Hypomethylation - Anti-metabolics - PARP - PI3K / mTOR / AKT / IGF1R - RAS / MEK - RNAi - VEGF / PDGF.
