Endangered Smelters: How Today's Global Copper Concentrate Deficit could Reshape the Industry
Business News Americas, Sep 2010
The global copper concentrate market is in deficit. Smelter capacity to process the product is 1.17Mt greater than mining operations' capacity to produce it, and the figure is expected to grow to 1.27Mt of fine copper next year and 1.57Mt in 2012. Some call it a concentrate shortage, others say surplus smelting capacity.
Either way, the imbalance is hurting many smelters’ profitability. Latin America is home to 10 operating copper smelters, seven of which sit in Chile.
The region’s copper smelting and refining industry is facing a challenging few years which could transform the landscape of the sector. This report details the nature and scope of the problem, as well as potential measures that could be implemented to safeguard the economic survival of the smelting industry.
