Focus on Bolivia: Players, Projects and Perspectives
Business News Americas, Oct 2010, Pages: 19
After centuries of metal and mineral production as an essential component of its economy but with little effective control over the activity, Bolivia is an old mining country trying to turn its history around. Mining sector GDP grew an average of 20.7% annually in 2006-09, particularly driven by record growth of 54.4% in 2008.
Bolivia’s mineral potential is unquestionable, but it competes for investment with formidable neighbors, many of which can boast a more attractive reputation for stability. As such, the nation must work harder at attracting private investment if it wants to see its plans come to fruition. Even so, this is a country that is not at all closed for private investment, despite a certain notoriety.
This report aims to identify the main players driving Bolivian mining and analyze the merits and flaws of the authorities’ vision for the sector, as well as examine how these factors are shaping the nation’s investment climate. It also takes a special look at two big projects that exemplify the state’s ambition: steel at El Mutún and lithium at the Salar de Uyuni.
