Three major players operate in the Colombian mobile market: Comcel, the market leader, controlled by Mexico’s América Móvil; Movistar, the Colombian mobile unit of Spain’s Telefónica; Tigo, controlled by Luxembourg-based Millicom, with minority stakes owned by ETB and UNE. Comcel and Movistar have been in operation since 1994, although they have both changed names and shareholders over the years. The third mobile player to enter the market was Colombia Móvil, in November 2003.
