Energy Efficiency in the Electric Sector
Business News Americas, Jan 2010, Pages: 11
Energy efficiency (EE) is not a new idea to the region; most programs have been running since the 1990s. Nevertheless, the idea has not yet become an energy source in its own right as it has in some developed countries. But EE has gained acceptance and success in some countries in the region and is now considered a reliable energy 'source' that is included in long term energy planning.
And the payoff for EE is not insignificant - regional energy policy makers are beginning to understand that if done properly, EE programs can be relied upon to avoid up to 20% of future energy use. On a global scale, EE programs are expected to reduce electricity demand by 12% by 2030. If EE programs had not been launched in the 1970s, electricity consumption would be 40% higher worldwide, but Latin America did not achieve such high rates of reduction, and for this reason this report will try to give a review of government plans in some reference countries.
This report will briefly sketch the electric oriented EE programs in the largest electricity consuming countries in the region and it will discuss the impact they have had on long-term energy planning.
