Appliance Industry Manufacturing Focus 2010: Cooking Appliances
UBM Canon, Dec 2010, Pages: 12
With energy costs continuing to increase in the foreseeable future, homeowners are becoming more conscientious of their energy use. Over the past decade, appliance manufacturers realized significant opportunity from the growing demand for Energy Star appliances to counter rising energy costs - growth was most notable in HVAC and major appliance categories - and this trend is leading to the development of new, advanced technology for kitchen appliances.
While Energy Star efficiency standards currently do not exist for kitchen appliances, eco-friendliness has become a top priority for consumers. Connected technology that allows homeowners to monitor water/energy use is at the forefront of advancements, and will provide users with the ability to alter their behavior based on consumption.
LG Electronics has taken a leading role in developing energy-efficient kitchen appliances. The SolarCUBE MP9287NW, a kitchen countertop oven, uses a halogen heater, grill, convection fan, and microwave - or lightwave technology - to cook food four times faster than a conventional oven. According to LG, the appliance saves 50.7% of the energy used by traditional ovens.
Smart appliances with connectivity and advanced display technology will allow for monitoring of inventory, as well as assist with food preparation with the ability to offer meal suggestions and recipes based on available stock. Samsung, the leading manufacturer of computer memory chips, is developing appliances that use smart technology to simplify food preparation. The manufacturer has developed the world’s first 2-dimensional barcode scanning system - the scanner reads the smart codes printed on food packaging - which allows for the reduction of errors in the food-preparation process - resulting in lowered food and energy costs for the homeowner.
Impacting the ability of manufacturers to develop and offer products providing smart technology is the affordability and desire by the homeowner for products that offer these enhancements. Demand for products with these amenities is more apparent in Europe and Japan, and is expected to increase in the U.S.
