Pharmaceutical companies remain on an upward R&D trend through 2010. More than 9,000 new drugs were added to the pipeline last year, showing growth in all clinical stages of development. The pharmaceutical and biotech industries' top 20 pipeline leaders spent a combined $86.57 billion during 2009. Several leading pharmaceutical companies have implemented large-scale and aggressive M&A strategies. In March 2009, Roche acquired Genentech, expanding its footprint in personalized medicine. And Pfizer, with the acquisition of Wyeth, has increased research emphasis on biotherapeutics and vaccines.
The healthcare industry’s leading R&D spender is Roche, spending $9.1 billion in 2009, up 11.6% from 2008. Roche was the industry's top R&D spender for the third consecutive year. This Switzerland-based company is a leader in research-focused healthcare with combined strengths in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. With locations in 90 countries, Roche is the largest biotechnology company worldwide. Roche focuses its R&D investment in the discovery and development of new medicines and diagnostic products for the treatment of cancer, hepatitis, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes. By acquiring Genentech Inc., Roche expanded its pipeline and late-stage product development capabilities.
