Technology Overview
Security Issues Propelled to the Forefront in the Burgeoning Mobile Device Space
The growing prowess of mobile devices has enabled a more robust and dynamic mobility experience. Smartphones are poised to bypass the 50 percent penetration mark of mobile phones in near future. During 2010, there was prolific uptake of diverse smartphones and tablets among mobile users. This trend is expected to continue and pick up momentum in the coming years, owing to the advantages of larger screens, more robust processing power, and longer battery lifecycle that these devices offer. “As consumers and businesses are heavily relying on smartphones for e-mail, contacts, mobile banking, and other critical applications that require sensitive personal data, there is a dire need for further bolstering the security posture of these devices,” notes the analyst of this research service. “In cases where the smartphone could be compromised by unauthorized personnel, highly valuable information could be accessed and subsequently incur heavy damages.”
Currently, security protection embedded in mobile devices is regarded as inept at combating the myriad of attacks present in the mobile arena. Generally, the security measures utilized are conventionally intended for desktop protection. Mobile devices represent a completely different playing field and require vastly advanced security protection to safeguard against external attacks. Furthermore, current trends indicate that these smart mobile devices are vulnerable as they are perpetually interconnected to the Web and enterprise network, enabling attackers to intercept critical data through this mobile medium.
To address this concern, different security measures could be considered. Hardware-protected certificates, hardware-protection or biometric security protection could be embedded in the mobile devices to offer a higher degree of protection and mitigate external attack. Over the past one year, there has been a dramatic shift within the enterprise smartphone segment. Traditionally, this particular market had been dominated by Blackberry, which offers high-level security features that have been approved by IT administrators. However, mobile devices from Apple Inc. and Android are steadily expanding their footprint in the corporate environment. The proliferation of mobile device management (MDM) solutions from various developers has significantly lowered concerns over mobile security. “MDM solutions facilitate remote control and management of mobile devices from a single console in order to prevent data leakage,” says the analyst. “They offer unique features, such as automatic encryption of mobile data, enable remote distribution of mobile applications, and real time device tracking.” The primary objective of this technology is to secure the proliferation of smartphones within the business front while offering a simplified and streamlined user experience. According to their specific security needs and IT budget, companies can choose the ideal solution that conforms to their stringent policies.
