Among the development plans drawn up by Chilquinta, an energy distributor controlled by multi-national companies Sempra Energy and AEI that serves about 500,000 residential customers on Chile’s central coast, is the implementation of “smart grid” technology in its infrastructure.

According to experts, smart grids have the potential to completely redefine the business model used for electricity supply. It means upgrading infrastructure through the intensive use of IT in order to equip it with a sophisticated communication system and includes everything from meters with microprocessors to state-of-the-art data analysis systems at central points of the networks.

This report details the different components of the so-called smart grid, the benefits it promises as well as the challenges and opportunities that it poses for IT solution developers.
