Iron-Ore - A Review of the Global Market 2011
Creamer Media, March 2011, Pages: 24
Iron-ore is mined in about 50 countries, with the largest producers being China, Australia, Brazil, India, Russia, Ukraine, South Africa, the US, Canada and Sweden. This report offers insight into the global and South African iron-ore markets, and profiles the main iron-ore producers operating globally and in South Africa. Iron-ore production is highly concentrated, with world production currently dominated by Vale, Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, the so-called Big Three, which accounted for a combined 34,5% of global production in 2009. These three companies also controlled 61% of the world's seaborne iron-ore trade that year.
In South Africa iron-ore production is dominated by Kumba Iron Ore, a subsidiary of diversified miner Anglo American, which accounts for around 40-million tons a year – or about 80% – of the country's total iron-ore production and is the world's fourth-largest supplier of seaborne iron-ore. The country has a second, but significantly smaller, iron-ore miner, Assmang, which is a joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Assore. South Africa's domestic consumption of iron-ore, meanwhile, is dominated by the steelmaking industry, where ArcelorMittal South Africa is the largest consumer.
