Europe is one of the largest appliance markets in the world and is home to some of the world's biggest appliance producers. European consumers have been ahead of the rest of the world in terms of their environmental awareness — and their willingness to pay a premium for energy-efficient appliances. The rapid pace of energy-efficiency progression in Europe can be witnessed in the ratings level of the majority of the units actually sold, as reported by the European Association of Household Appliance Producers. In fact, additional ratings of A+, A++, and A+++ have been implemented to account for appliances that significantly exceed the A-rating efficiency levels.

In 2010, BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH announced the development of the ecoStar2 dishwasher, engineered to set a new record level of dishwasher energy efficiency — at its launch it was said to be 30% more efficient than a Class A rating required. The unit is designed to use only 7 liters of water in a cycle, half the water of more conventional dishwashers.

European appliance makers have seen a growing interest in built-in appliances, and growing sales resulting from them. Stockholm-based Electrolux reported a record profit for 2010 and reached its operating margin target of 6%, with all business areas showing improved results over 2009. Electrolux President and CEO Hans Stråberg (since retired) credited the strong 2010 results to Electrolux's profitable European built-in appliance business. He noted that Electrolux already had a new line of built-in appliances ready for launch at retail. The line was exhibited in September 2010 at the Appliances IFA trade show in Berlin and received a favorable response from attendees.

Industry experts predict that the European appliance industry's sales will grow in 2011 and beyond, driven by demand for more environmentally friendly products and by consumers' post-recession desire to once again indulge in premium appliances — even if that indulgence is approached with a greater sense of frugality.
