The "Special Relationship": A Comparison of Consumer Book Buying Habits & Trends in the US & Britain
Bookmarketing Market Reports (BML), Jan 2009, Pages: 18
Since 1989, the UK market research agency BML has beenmonitoring consumer book purchases in Britain via its Books & Consumers survey. In 2007, the US bibliographic agency RR Bowker began to track US consumer book purchases in a similar way, via its PubTrack Consumer survey.
In 2008, BML and Bowker began to share their experiences of running consumer surveys in each country, to see what lessons each could learn from the other. It seemed a natural progression to also begin to compare the results of the two surveys, to help those operating in both markets to better understand the consumers in each location, and to provide insights to those looking outside their own country for an idea of what the future might hold for them. With this in mind, Bowker and BML joined forces in the Spring of 2009 to present a comparison of consumer book purchases in the US and Britain at a seminar at The London Book Fair. This report builds on that presentation, expanding the areas of coverage and highlighting the key similarities and differences between the two markets in terms of market performance, buyer demographics, book types bought, sources of purchase and purchase reasons.
Methodology
The methods used by BML and Bowker for monitoring consumer book purchases in Britain and the US are broadly similar, but with some important differences, which should be borne in mind when comparing the survey Undings.
