Subways and Urban Trains: Projects Roll In, Obstacles Persist
Business News Americas, Aug 2010, Pages: 11
Buenos Aires was the only city in Latin America with a subway system until 1969, when Mexico City’s subway opened. Since then, others have followed suit and today 16 cities in the region have underground transportation service.
Even in this context of system expansion over the past 40 years, growth started slowing in the 1980s. For a variety of reasons, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), transportation systems using buses that travel in special lanes at speeds close to and sometimes greater than the subway system, gained ground.
This report reviews the different urban mobility solutions which have been developed in the region and analyzes the obstacles still in place which hinder further expansion.
