The Road to Advanced Logistics in the Southern Cone
Business News Americas, Oct 2010, Pages: 15
In its last report on the economic outlook for the Americas, published on October 19th, the International Monetary Fund stated that the region’s growth was stronger than predicted. This momentum is especially noticeable in South America, where several economies are growing at around 7%, driven mainly by their exports. “Many of the countries in South America that export raw materials are facing extremely favorable conditions,” says the IMF, adding: “The dynamic activity of China and other Asian economies will keep the price of basic goods from South America high.”
But the vigorous economic growth in Latin America faces a major barrier: the region’s infrastructure deficit. And it’s not just a lack of investment. There is also the need to move forward more decisively in terms of infrastructure integration. These were the prevailing themes at the first Southern Cone Infrastructure Summit organized by Business News Americas in Santiago, Chile that brought together more than 150 regional leaders from both the public and private sectors.
This special report analyzes what footing Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay are on to undertake this challenge and examines the bottlenecks that must be resolved in their highway, railway, airport and port sectors to realize this vision.
