It is no wonder so many of today's top brands are using QR codes. These include GMC, Ford, Google, Pepsi, Ralph Lauren, The Weather Channel, Best Buy, Chevrolet, Starbucks, Facebook, and countless more.

Over the last several years, one of the drawbacks to using QR codes was user awareness and adoption, but that is rapidly changing. According to a February 2011 report by Mobio Identity Systems, Inc., an international mobile payments and marketing company, QR code adoption in North America is now “going ballistic.” Use and adoption on the continent jumped 1200% in the last six months of 2010.

But you don't need market research to tell you that. All you have to do is look around. Not just what you see around (have you been to Best Buy lately?), but marketing firms around the country are regularly hailing 2010 as the year that QR code usage turned the corner.

Many of these companies are seeing QR code marketing among their clients double or even triple. Trekk-Cross Media, which was responsible for NewPage's ubiquitous QR campaign at DSCOOP, is seeing a surge in QR adoption among its clients. The Ace Group, which has produced QR campaigns for the likes of Calvin Klein and SunTrust, saw its QR adoption increase threefold by the end of 2010.

It's time for marketers to start paying attention to QR codes.

Inside this report:

- Section 1 looks at what QR codes are, their various uses, and the different varieties of 2D codes beyond QRCs.

- Section 2 looks at how QR codes affect marketing, both their benefits and their drawbacks.

- Section 3 looks at QR code applications. Think you know how QR codes are used? From direct sales to music downloads to ticketing, the variety may surprise you.

- Section 4 looks at a number of detailed case studies using QR codes, as well as less detailed “best in class” examples from a variety of industries.

- Section 5 looks at the best practices for QR codes.

- Section 6 draws final conclusions and provides references for more information.
