Wet food for pets dropped in popularity for both dog and cat food, due to a preference for less expensive dry foods. This has hurt sales of metal packaging, as a decrease in volume sales is compounded by a shift to larger pack sizes in dry food, as consumers look for value purchases because of the recession. Within wet foods, however, consumers are still attracted by the single-serve options, and still opt for smaller sizes, thereby lessening the blow to metal packaging manufacturers.
