Peru: Under Telefónica's Grip of Steel
Business News Americas, Jan 2010, Pages: 13
Among Peruvians, Telefónica del Peru has a reputation similar to that of Telmex in Mexico, often the only available option for fixed line services and constantly at loggerheads with government attempts to curb activities that are deemed monopolistic. Consumer rights initiatives against Telefónica used to be a regular feature of the local news, but that changed about two years ago, most likely because mobile telephony has become far more popular. Even so, Telefónica still plays a significant role in the two most dynamic telecoms segments: broadband and mobile. Does this mean the authorities must continue to dedicate significant resources to monitoring the key market player?
In this report BNamericas considers whether competition from the mobile segment counteracts the need for strong regulation in the fixed line sector, and looks at the steps being taken to increase penetration of all services.
