Data Centers: The Latest Telco Status Symbol
Business News Americas, March 2010, Pages: 10
The convergence trend of the last few years means most telcos have come to look more and more like IT service providers, especially in the corporate services segment.
They have had to learn how to meet customers' data storage and software needs, and they themselves are open to new solutions and techniques - such as virtualization - that help them manage this side of the business more effectively.
In this age of Green IT and cutting costs, there is increasing hype surrounding the X as a Service (XaaS) business model and sharing or centralizing resources through cloud computing. At the same time, corporate and residential users alike are exchanging ever greater amounts of data and content, with voracious demand for storage capacity and bandwidth.
By pooling such capabilities and resources in purpose-built sections of their operations centers they have effectively become data center operators. In this report BNamericas considers the interplay between telcos and data center specialists, as well as the potential that this kind of infrastructure engenders for new services.
