Mexican Telecoms Version 2.0: All Change
Business News Americas, April 2010, Pages: 11
Over the last 15 years, as many Latin American markets progressed from state monopoly to private monopoly, and onward to a competitive ecosystem, Mexico remained a problem child, where the incumbent Telmex earned notoriety for running rings around each successive administration.
But the telecoms empire of Carlos Slim now includes much more than this national unit, such as overseas multi-service operators that have had the freedom to change with the times.
To make sure Telmex Mexico develops in-sync with these other units Carso Global has had to give a little ground and is also at the mercy of technological changes that have empowered new rivals.
This report highlights the importance of television operations for Telmex’s future and questions whether consumers will really benefit from the market changes afoot.
