Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It is a chronic disease marked by high levels of glucose in the blood. Type 2 diabetes is most common in patients that are of 45 years or greater, have a high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol of less than 35 mg/dL or triglyceride level of greater than 250 mg/dL, and/or have high blood pressure. The primary goal to treat type 2 diabetes is diet and exercise. However, if diet and exercise does not help maintain normal glucose levels, physicians may prescribe medication.
