Introduction

Cable MSOs compete directly with telecom operators in broadband access and TV services. Telecom and cable have historically had parallel technology supply chains. Now, leading MSOs have proposed new data architectures such as CMAP that point to convergence with non-cable IP and PON products. At the same time they wish to extract the maximum value from existing hybrid-fiber coax networks.

Features and benefits

- Understand changes in the little-publicized cable optical access network, which competes with telecom's FTTH deployments.
- See how the optics market is affected as MSOs prepare to evolve to FTTH in the long term.

Highlights

Cable MSO revenue grew despite the recession, but MSOs cautiously lowered capex. HFC systems revenues, already on a cyclical decline, fell to a low in 1Q09. They have since recovered and stabilized.
Despite a forecast for continued stable revenues, changes in product mix have already been seen. MSOs are asking for new technology to lower network costs --optics vendors have already responded.
Advances in digital synthesis are likely to replace specialized optics in future, further disrupting the value chain.

Your key questions answered

- The market for CATV optics was traditionally slow to change, and relatively shielded from price pressure. Why has that changed?
- Which products dominate the RF optics market? What new products will replace traditional products?
- Where is RF-over-glass finding traction?
