Introduction
This analyzer (formerly the 'Smartphone Capability Tracker') provides a quantitative view of smartphones and their capabilities, with the aim of highlighting the evolving capabilities of phones in the fast-moving smartphone market. This is the sixth in a series of quarterly reports, and looks at all smartphone models from major manufacturers launched in 1Q10 through 4Q10.
Features and benefits
- Ovum counts the number of smartphone models by software platform. - We count models with the following capabilities: GPS, Wi-Fi, and network type (HSUPA, HSDPA, WCDMA, EV-DO).
Highlights
The smartphone market is still experiencing strong growth, with 152 new smartphone models launched in the last year. From a platform perspective, Android continues to cement its lead, and is now found on 94 separate handset models. From a software capability perspective, support for Adobe Flash 10 continues to grow, with 10 devices now supporting the cross-platform applications framework. On the hardware front, ARM Cortex A8 chipsets are set to replace ARM 11-based chipsets as the dominant CPU in the next quarter.
