The Report: Algeria 2011
Oxford Business Group, March 2011, Pages: 224
Algeria is currently the second largest country in Africa (and will be the largest if, as is widely expected, Sudan splits into two countries) with a total landmass of 2.38m sq km. The country is rich in natural resources, including substantial reserves of iron ore, coal, phosphates, uranium, zinc, lead, mercury and gold. Fossil fuels are the backbone of the economy, representing over 98% of exports, 60% of revenue and 40% of GDP. Nevertheless, Algeria is still largely unexplored and foreign firms are increasingly investing in joint ventures with Sonatrach, the state-owned oil company, to further exploration and development of natural resources. The country’s population is estimated at 35.6m inhabitants based on 2010 figures, with the majority concentrated in the north of the country. Approximately 70% of the population are Arabs, while Berbers make up around 30%. A vast majority of around 99% of the population is Sunni Muslim. Literacy rates are currently around 70% and women constitute the majority of enrolments in higher education at 54%.
