Signals way out Ahead: Looking Well Beyond Tomorrow and Out into the Distant Future

Description:
Signals way out Ahead: Looking Well Beyond Tomorrow and Out into the Distant Future: Technology and Market Trends for the Next Decade

In this issue of Signals Ahead the publisher looks out into the coming decade and discuss several key technology and market trends that they believe are the most pertinent to their readers. Specific topics that they discuss include the following:
LTE Data Roaming. Other than solving business-related issues, technology challenges abound. HSPA/HSPA+ offers a pretty compelling fallback technology while LTE won't result in lower tariffs - arguably the tariffs could be substantially higher.

LTE Advanced. Certain LTE features will prove more promising and compelling than others. The publisher prefers carrier aggregation, CoMP, MU-MIMO, SON, and various heterogenous network features.

3G Network Optimization. HSPA has a lot of additional headroom. Operator strategies include data caching, technology upgrades (e.g., DC-HSDPA, MIMO, etc), advanced receiver architectures, small cells for capacity offload, and Cell_PCH/URA_PCH.

VoLTE. Some operators are 'hot and heavy' in the public comments regarding the use of LTE to deliver basic voice services. However, due to technical challenges and the publisher's belief that at least some of these operators won't throw 'caution into the wind' the publisher believes there is a disconnect between what they say and what will eventually emerge.

802.16m. Outside of the standards body, may it rest in peace.

EV-DO Rev B/DO-Advanced. Lots of opportunity outside of North America. Certain DO-Advanced features prove promising but it will be nearly impossible to quantify the market size.
