While the main subject of this report is technologies for distributed generation, it will be necessary to look in some detail at the issues surrounding DG too. To this end, Chapter 2 will be devoted to network issues. These include examining how DG is to be integrated into a networks and how the networks themselves will need to adapt. This chapter will also look briefly at the concept of the virtual power plant created by the aggregation of a large number of small DG installations to provide dispatchable power. Chapter 3 will then examine the traditional technologies for DG. It will include gas turbines and gas engines, diesel and petrol engines and micro turbines. Use of these units in CHP systems will also be discussed. Chapter 4 will be devoted to fuel cells, looking at the major types being developed and their prospects while Chapter 5 will turn to renewable technologies.

The environmental implications of DG will be discussed in Chapter 6 along side legislative issues. Particular attention will be paid to the barriers which currently limit the wider integration of DG into networks. This will be followed, in Chapter 7, by a look at the economic issues raised by DG. Finally, Chapter 8 will assess the prospects for distributed generation in the coming years.
