Asia-Pacific Methanol Industry - Strong Demand From Downstream Applications Driving Growth
GlobalData, March 2011, Pages: 6
Methanol is a biodegradable liquid chemical, commonly produced from natural gas. It is a chemical intermediary whose major end-use segments are formaldehyde, Dimethyl Ether (DME) and acetic acid. It is also used as an alternative to petroleum-based fuels. Asia-Pacific has been the leader of the global demand for methanol, growing three-fold from 2000 to 2010. China is the driver of this huge demand, accounting for 76% of the total Asia-Pacific methanol demand in 2010. This rapid growth in the methanol industry can be attributed to increased demand in its end-use segments. In the future demand is expected to be fuelled by alternative uses such as gasoline blending, production of olefins, direct combustion applications and Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC).
